# Interested parties under ISO 9001 4.2 | docxpert

## Who counts

Example; the assessment depends on your organization.
| Party | Typical requirements | Addressed through the QMS? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Customers | Quality, on-time delivery, documentation, complaint handling | Yes, in order handling and customer satisfaction |
| Employees | Clear instructions, training, safe working conditions | Partly: competence and awareness; safety separately |
| Suppliers | Clear orders, fair evaluation, reliable acceptance | Yes, in control of external providers |
| Authorities | Compliance with statutory product requirements | Yes, where product-related |
| Owners | Profitability, reputation, growth | Partly, through objectives and management review |
| Certification body | Conformity with the standard, evidence | Yes |

## What “relevant” means

A party is relevant if its requirements affect your ability to deliver conforming products and services or to achieve customer satisfaction. Neighbours, banks or associations may be relevant but need not be. Justify the selection briefly instead of listing every conceivable group.

The standard does not require you to meet all requirements. It requires you to know and monitor them and, from 2026, to decide which are addressed through the QMS. More under [ISO 9001:2026 context and interested parties](https://docxpert.io/en/guides/iso-9001-2026/context-and-climate-change).

## Four-step approach

1. 1

    Collect parties

Collect all groups dealing with the company together with management.

2. 2

    Assess relevance

Briefly justify for each group whether it is relevant to the QMS.

3. 3

    Determine requirements

Record the main requirements of relevant parties, including unspoken expectations.

4. 4

    Decide and monitor

Decide whether and where a requirement is addressed in the QMS, and discuss changes in management review.

## Implementing it in docxpert

The “Context and interested parties” template in the [template library](https://docxpert.io/en/features/template-library) contains a register with party, requirement and treatment. For the 2026 edition, the decision on which requirements are addressed through the QMS has its own section. Changes belong in management review.

## Frequently asked questions

Is “interested party” the same as stakeholder?

Essentially yes. ISO uses “interested party” and names “stakeholder” as an equivalent term.

Must all requirements of interested parties be met?

No. They must be determined and monitored. From ISO 9001:2026 you decide which of them are addressed through the QMS.

Do I need a stakeholder register?

The standard does not prescribe a form. A table with party, requirement and treatment is, however, the simplest way to evidence the requirement.

How often is the list reviewed?

At least before management review, where from 2026 changes in the needs and expectations of interested parties are an explicit input.
